Oil Spills: The BIG Clean Up

  • Lewis Latimer House Museum 34-41 137th St Queens, NY 11254 USA (map)

Become environmental engineers for the day! This STEAM workshop is centered around keeping our planet healthy by decreasing oil spills!

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, pollution has affected our planet in a number of ways, oil spills being one of them. Last year in October, a major oil spill was detected in Southern California, caused by an underwater pipe. The spill released over 24,000 gallons of oil into the water. These types of spills are called marine oil spills. They are detrimental to coastal ecosystems, natural deposits, and the wellness of coastal communities. Luckily, chemical and environmental engineers work each day to diminish spills and create more efficient ways to keep our industrial foundation afloat while protecting our earth.

Each student will observe and record findings in makeshift “ocean buckets.” and use tools to clean up the mess. This activity will be used to connect their work to real world challenges. Learn all about Lewis Latimer and other environmental engineers of color who have worked diligently to protect our planet.
